Warning Signs
SIGNS YOUR GUITAR NEEDS FRETWORK
Sometimes a standard bench setup cannot fix deep-seated playability issues. If your instrument is experiencing any of these common warning signs, your frets require physical correction:
Buzzing a Setup Can't Fix
Consistent buzzing on specific strings or zones, even after adjusting the action and truss rod relief.
Dead Notes
Notes that completely choke out, rattle, or die when you bend strings or play higher up the neck.
Visible Fret Wear & Divots
Deep pits, grooves, or flat spots worn directly into the wire beneath your most-played strings.
Fret Sprouting
Sharp fret ends poking out past the edges of the binding or wood, typically triggered by fretboard shrinkage during dry weather.

FRETWORK SERVICES & OPTIONS
From minor maintenance to complete neck overhauls, we offer precise tiers of fretwork matched to the condition of your instrument:
Fret Polish
Eliminates built-up oxidation, grime, and micro-scratches for a slick, frictionless bending surface.
Dress & Crown
Reshapes flattened or slightly worn frets back to a perfect rounded apex for precise intonation.
Level & Crown
Grinds uneven fret heights to a uniform plane, recrowns each fret, and polishes them to a mirror shine.
Partial Refret
Replaces only the worn frets, usually 1 to 5 or 1 to 12, then levels them into the frets you are keeping so you cannot feel the join.
Full Refret
A complete tear-down and rebuild of your playing surface, with your choice of wire material and size specs from scratch.
Premium Materials
PREMIUM WIRE CHOICES & BRANDS
We exclusively build with industry-leading fret wire sourced from Jescar, Dunlop, and Stew-Mac. You choose the material and size profile that fits your hand:
Wire Materials
Classic Nickel Silver for traditional tone and vintage-correct responsiveness, or ultra-durable Stainless Steel for glass-like playability and a lifetime of zero wear.
Wire Profiles
Tailor your feel with sizes including Jumbo, Medium Jumbo, 6105 (tall and narrow), or 6100 (extra jumbo).
Surgical Bench Precision
THE HOT ROD FRETWORK PROCESS
Every neck goes through our strict, documented workflow:
Assessment & Photography
We micro-inspect the neck under specialized lighting, map out problem areas, and photograph the starting condition.
Neck Relief Adjustment
We dial the truss rod to a controlled baseline relief so the fret plane can be read true before any metal is touched.
Fret Level Check
We locate every high and low spot across the board using an engineered fret rocker.
Precision Fret Removal
For refrets, old wire is extracted cleanly using localized heat and chip-preventing tools to preserve the structural integrity of your fretboard wood.
New Wire Installation
Fresh wire is precision-radiused to match your fretboard, pressed or seated into the slots, and structurally secured.
Level, Crown & Polish
The frets are leveled to an absolute flat plane, crowned back to a perfect point for accurate string tracking, and micro-polished.
Nut Re-Slotting
If the new fret heights alter your action dynamics, we re-cut and dress the nut slots to match.
Full Setup Included
Every fret level or refret ships with a full Hot Rod setup, so it plays right out of the gate.
